Mahjong has been having a big moment lately, and for me, that makes this new collection feel especially fun.
Growing up, I remember watching my mom play mahjong. I can still picture the pretty tiles, the walls lined up around the table, and the sound of the game as everyone played. It stuck with me long before I ever understood the details.
So seeing mahjong become popular again has been really fun.
What I didn’t expect? American Mah Jongg has its own whole vibe. No stealing tiles, a card full of winning hands, and some seriously gorgeous tile sets everywhere you look. Definitely not the version I grew up watching.
As we started learning more about this style of play, it quickly became clear why so many people love it. American Mah Jongg blends strategy, tradition, social connection, and personal style in a way that feels both classic and current. That made it a natural fit for us.
That’s what inspired us to create a new Mahjong category at Necessary Design.
